Hemorrhoids are enlarged or swollen veins near the anus or lower rectum. They may develop from straining, constipation, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, or increased pressure, and can cause bleeding, itching, pain, swelling, or a lump.

A surgical evaluation may be recommended when hemorrhoids are painful, bleeding frequently, recurring, or not improving with conservative treatment. New bleeding should always be checked rather than assumed.
